Sports, Outdoor Recreation & Adventure — A Lowcountry Playground

Berkeley County captures the serene beauty and storied heritage of South Carolina’s Lowcountry. As soon as you arrive, you’ll find yourself among moss-draped live oaks, winding rivers, cypress-tupelo swamps, and historic towns that feel timeless. The county’s appeal lies in its variety — from tranquil botanical gardens to rustic historic sites, from swaying marshes to peaceful riverbanks — offering something for both relaxed getaways and curious explorers.

Beyond its history and charm, Berkeley County stands out as a haven for sports enthusiasts, outdoor adventurers, and anyone who loves to move, explore, or unwind in nature.

Nature-based recreation thrives here through water, trails, and access to some of the top freshwater systems in the region. The county’s Berkeley Blueway network — comprising over 235 miles of paddling trails across creeks, swamps, and coastal waterways — offers 25 distinct kayak and canoe routes, suitable for all skill levels. Whether you want a tranquil float among cypress trees or a longer back-country paddle, the Blueway system delivers.
If fishing is your sport, the county doesn’t disappoint. The world-class Santee Cooper Lakes (Lake Marion and Lake Moultrie), along with the winding channels of the Cooper River, create expansive freshwater playgrounds. Anglers can find largemouth bass, catfish, crappie, and more from the shore, a kayak, or aboard a chartered fishing trip. Lakefront camps, boat ramps, and guide services make planning easy.

For those who prefer their recreation on land, there are plenty of options too. The area around Old Santee Canal Park features boardwalks through backwaters, nature trails, and birdwatching — perfect for a morning hike or stroll after a paddle.

If you're coming as a group — family, friends, or a sports club — Berkeley County’s mix of tranquil water trails, lakes, woodland paths, and state-of-the-art recreation infrastructure makes it a compelling destination for everything from laid-back weekend escapes to organized fishing, kayaking, and outdoor adventure events.
